In order to make language learning logical and simple, the reading material in textbooks is usually quite dull. And most textbooks don’t teach much about the writing style of novels and short stories. This means that even an intermediate student of Japanese might encounter many difficulties when attempting to explore Japanese literature. This book is aimed at students who wish to bridge this gap between real Japanese literature and the reading material of textbooks.
This book will also help students learn or solidify a lot of the grammar required to pass level N4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test as well as expand their vocabulary, because while the stories in this collection are based on stories from Japanese folklore, they have been written in a more accessible manner and with common words.

This book got past all my study problems. Mostly I fight against every textbook I open, and collapse into a funk in under 2 minutes.Read it all, 100%, a nice shock. I also made decent notes, and want to buy the next in this series. It's well pitched to my "false beginner" plateau. If you struggle with learning Japanese in any way this book helps you relax while nudging you to grow. The layout is perfect for me (Japanese full story, then English close translation, then good, comprehensive explanation of the Japanese). No furigana helps you see the Kanji without distraction. The stories are short enough. When you need to use a dictionary it won't delay you for long.
Japanese friends also enjoyed reading this format because it helped their English.

First Japanese Reader A Beginner Dual Language Book Japanese Graded Reader Japanese Edition eBook Lets Speak Japanese Reviews
This is a great starting point for breaking into reading Japanese stories. The vocab and grammar required to read each story follows each story as well as an English translation. And the grammar is presented in a progressive manner, so you have to eventually take off your training wheels.
There are plenty of kanji and no furigana--so you can use the stories for kanji practice too. It’s really nice to read some actual stories and get away from the writings on travel, buying things, and self-introductions found in text books.
Other than the text size restrictions, this is an amazing book. Chock full of in depth explanations of cultural context as well as grammar/vocabulary translations that go beyond the dictionary translation. May decide to buy the paperback because there’s almost too much content to absorb digitally.
Hiragana doesn't work, just random symbols. And this was AFTER downloading Japanese fonts. Consider this book to be 'paper only' and you will be fine.
Note added later This item does work on kindle for PC. Very nice book. Raising it to 3 stars. Fix the font problem on mobile and it will get at least 4 stars.
Second note fixed! Thank you!
Very useful book with each story in Japanese first and then in English and then a grammar and vocabulary breakdown. It's great to have the stories separated out so that you can really try to read the Japanese before resorting to a different page for the English clues. I would have liked to have a hover over furigana feature in the so that I could read an unfamilar kanji and not break the flow of the story but that's a minor point. This is a very useful book and learning tool.
Several short stories with full vocabulary and cultural explanations and translations. Excellent for learning kanji and basic grammar. No furigana.
